At 29 I finally decided to follow my dream of working on volcanoes! Here are some of my experiences and lots of photos of the incredible places I am lucky enough to work in.

Festival fun!

I went to the observatory yesterday after a leisurely breakfast on the main square. Carlos and I discussed the plan for the next few weeks, and now we have one… sort of! Carlos has a few meetings next week so we're only going to the field on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Because we broke the truck last year, Gabriel, the observatory Director won't lend us another one! Doh! Carlos reckons we can borrow one from the Jalisco Civil Protection, so fingers crossed!

I am now staying with Mini and Carlos in their house. I had thought I was going to be staying in the hotel but Mini called me this morning telling me to pack my stuff and bring it to their house - I didn't actually fully understand, so I rocked up without anything thinking they wanted to spend the day with me!

If you've read the blog before, you'll know that last year I brought Eric with me for his first trip to a volcano. You'll also know that Donaji, Carlos' daughter fell in love with Eric, so I brought another little sheep with me, who we called Ernie. Well, it's now Nenita and he's a she, and Donaji is delighted!

There's a big festival in Colima in February which is for San Felipe de Jesus who is the saint of protection from natural disasters - quite apt considering the city is 30km from what's considered the most active volcano in North America!! For pretty much the whole of February there will be dances, bull-fighting, shows and music in the streets. Mini took me to see the bull-fighting ring.

It's pretty cool. It's all made from wood and woven palm leaves to make matts and covers for the stand. Mini said the atmosphere is incredible, and people dance and sing in the stands. I saw some photos from the fighting though - looks brutal! I'm not sure I want to see it, but I reckon it's one of those experiences you can't say no to! I'll just look away when it gets stabbed!

After, we went along to a park close to the bull-fighting ring, where a couple of guys in the back of their truck were playing music on drums and a flute, and lead a procession of dancers and cowboys on horseback to the ring.
